What are social networks? What are the different social networks? What is the most used social network in the world? I am often asked these types of questions. I am often asked by people who are not involved in the digital transformation, who do not have profiles on any network or who use them very little.
But they are interested in many reasons, they want to monetize their business, make sure their children are not at risk, or simply entertain themselves with them.
These communication tools have changed over the years, and will undoubtedly continue to do so in the future. But they are here to stay, because they represent the new ways in which we humans interact thanks to new technologies.
I remember those distant days of MySpace, perhaps the first social network comparable to what we know today. The social networks are websites that connect their registered users and allow them to upload photographs, videos, comments or musical themes. They facilitate the establishment of relationships, contacts, messaging services, news and other functionalities.
There are numerous and they all have mobile apps. So I recommend that you install a few, to get up to date or, for example, to keep in communication with your kids. They are always there.
Many kids even admit to using Snapchat more, suggesting that it could be the future of social networking.
So what are people using now? Take a look at my list for a quick refresher.
These are the main ones:
Most of us already know that Facebook is the biggest. It has approximately two billion monthly active users and more than a billion who log on daily.
Twitter is known as the real-time public microblogging network where news is known the fastest.
LinkedIn is geared towards professional and business contacts. You can create a professional network and make it a powerful weapon.
After Google, YouTube is the second largest search engine. Despite being owned by Google, YouTube can still be recognized as a social network with a personality of its own. From music videos and movies, to personal blogs and independent films, YouTube has it all.
It’s the best social network for sharing real-time photos and short videos while you’re on the go, that’s Instagram. Followers are part of the charm of this social network and getting them requires very diverse techniques.
It is now even a leading advertising platform for brands, as well as influencers, who legitimately generate revenue via the network.
It’s a place to find images, which shows how important visual content has become on the web.
It is a popular blogging platform among teens and young adults. Like Pinterest, it’s known for sharing visual content.
Snapchat is powered by instant messaging and relies entirely on mobile devices. Material that is posted, such as photos or videos, disappears shortly after it is viewed by the recipient and has multiple advantages and disadvantages.
It works by displaying the submitted links that users either upvote or downvote. The ones that receive the most upvotes will be pushed to the first page
It works for photo sharing.
I don’t need to tell you, because you will have guessed it from the beginning of my post: Facebook is the most used platform. And not only that, but it has increased by sixty million monthly active users: from one point ninety-four billion in March 2017 to two as zero one billion on June 30, 2017 (later updated to 2.07).
The growth rate appears to continue at twenty million active users per month. By the end of the year we should see two point one billion monthly active users.
This is followed by YouTube with 1.5 billion monthly active users, Instagram with 800 million monthly, Twitter with 330 million, Reddit with 250, Pinterest with 200, Vine with another 200 million and Ask with 160 million.
There are many uses you can make of these media. You can use them to promote personal or professional content, build your personal brand, sell products from your business or use them as a way to get closer to family and friends.
Sometimes, you can even use them as your personal photo album or as a kind of diary, which you can view whenever you want in a convenient and quick way. The fact that it can also be seen by many other people is your choice, because privacy conditions are getting more and more personalized and restrictive.
Yet, there are questions that will still be there. What are social networks? What are the different social networks? What is the most used social network in the world? And they will continue to make us think, because the answers can change overnight and will always lead us to a much more philosophical question: why are human beings eminently social?
