What are backlinks?

As you probably already know, SEO is divided into SEO On-Page and SEO Off-Page techniques. While the former refers to the set of factors that you can work on your own website to improve positioning, Off-Page SEO is mainly focused on getting backlinks to your website.

What is a backlink and what is it for?

A backlink is a link that points to a certain page or article on your website from another website. The main function of backlinks is to increase the relevance and authority of your website and have a significant impact on the ranking of your website in the results pages of the different search engines. For this we use quality, quantity and anchor text.

In fact, working on link building is one of the main jobs of SEO experts. This work is called linkbuilding.

When it comes to getting links or backlinks there is a very important factor to take into account. It is better to have one quality backlink than 4 bad ones.

What determines the quality of a link?

The quality of a backlink is determined by its origin. If the website that has linked to your content has a high Page Rank, the quality of the link will be much higher than if it comes from a page with little or no relevance.

Types of backlinks

There are two categories of backlinks:

  1. Dofollow backlinks: are those links that transfer PageRank, that is, through this link the page that has placed a link to a certain content of your website is transferring authority to you. This type of links are the really important ones.
  2. Nofollow Backlinks: Contrary to the previous ones, Nofollow links do not transmit authority or transmit very little. This type of links only serve to try to attract more traffic to your page or to improve the user experience of your web visitors. It is also a way to give naturalness to the link profile of your website.

What both types of links have in common is that they dilute the PR of the page that contains them.

How to get quality inbound links?

There are many ways to get quality links, I recommend the following:

Share your content on social networks

Social networks have a huge potential when it comes to getting quality backlinks due to the large number of people who use them.

Create an account in the main social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Google+ are the most used) although depending on the type of page or blog you have, you may be interested in others such as Tumbrl or Pinterest.

Once you have created your accounts, you must find your audience, for this the best thing you can do is to study your competition and start following people who follow them. In addition, you should join the groups that exist about your business sector.

While you are creating your audience, share all your content on the networks and make good use of hashtags.

Create original and quality content

One of the best ways to get other sites to link to you is by creating 100% original articles that deal with new topics. The more quality content you create, the easier it will be for your articles to be linked.

Among the most linked contents are tutorials, rankings and lists and infographics, so it is recommended that you include this type of content on your website.

My recommendation is that you vary your articles, for example, inserting videos of your creation and study which contents are the most demanded by your audience.

Detect trends

In order to write about current topics it is important that you follow and review experts from around the world. This will allow you to detect trends. In addition, if you are the first to talk about a certain topic in Spanish, the rest of the professionals in the sector will have no other choice but to quote you. Another way to use trends to our advantage is to use Google Trends, a very useful tool to gain visits.

Conduct interviews with relevant people

Although it is difficult to achieve, you should try to get in touch with people who are of interest to your audience and try to get an interview. This way you will have an exclusive article that will generate a lot of backlinks.

Write as a guest for other blogs

One way to make yourself known and get quality backlinks is to look for other bloggers who are experts in your sector and offer to write an article for them by Guest Posting. This way it is very likely that the followers of that blog will end up following you and linking to one of your articles.

Remember to be grateful and also offer others to write on your blog.

Participate in contests or create your own contest

A great way to make yourself known and get links is by participating in one of the many contests that exist for bloggers. These types of contests are followed by thousands of people, so the articles you submit will be read by many people who will not hesitate to link to you if your creation is fresh, original and adds value.

On the other hand, you can also be the organizer of an award for bloggers in your business sector, so in addition to gaining readers you will be increasing and improving your own brand image.

Search for your articles on the net

Unfortunately there are many people who copy paragraphs or entire articles without attributing them to their real author.

For this reason it is recommended that you search for your creations on the net (whether they are videos, images or texts) and check if they have linked to your page. If they haven’t, ask them to do it. Remember that it is your work and you have the right to be recognized for it.

Participate in forums

The Internet is full of forums on all topics. In many of these forums, as long as your comments are of value, they will let you include links to your website.

If you are not sure if you can do it, you only have to ask the administrators of each forum. Of course, you will probably have to participate with some regularity.

So far my article on What are inbound links or backlinks, I hope you liked it and that it helps you to improve the positioning of your website.
